The Hagstrom H8 was the first eight string bass, and quickly spawned many multi-stringed bass rivals, it was manufactured for a brief period in the late 1960s. The strings were set in pairs, each tuned an octave apart, so it was played like a four string. It is of course possible to tune in 5ths or any other interval. The pole pieces are wider than those on previous Hagstrom bass pickups, to allow for the additional string. Few instruments are as steeped in rock and roll folklore as the H8 which was used by Jimi Hendrix and Noel Redding on the Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland sessions.
This particular bass was used extensively in the late 60's and early 70's by Jerry Boyett in the band Delta. It has a mahogany slab body and a mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard. Original gloss red translucent finish in nice condition with some belt buckle marks but no signs of abuse. Has its original hardware, Van Ghent tuners, two pickups with slider selector switches, tone and mute switches and volume control. Like many in the 70's, Jerry felt compelled to make some modifications including an extra input jack, volume & tone with a push button on/off switch. These were added to the pickguard and have since been removed. The holes have been covered with a piece of black acrylic allowing the bass to be played with no obstruction.
